Aberfeldy Mod once again attracted hundreds of participants to the Highland Perthshire village for two days of Gaelic music, song and oral tradition competitions.
Friday saw the children’s events take place in the town hall with participants from schools across Perthshire and beyond. This year also saw children from the recently-opened Gaelic medium class in Breadalbane Primary participate for the first time.
A change in the organisation of the Mod this year saw all events on Saturday being held in the new Breadalbane Community Campus which was heralded as a great success. Many pipers, signers, musicians and choirs gathered on campus to participate in a variety of competitions. There were a number of home wins for Aberfeldy, notably the Aberfeldy Gaelic Choir winning the Quaich for their 4-part harmony Gaelic song.
This year, the organisers were keen to further engage with the community and help give a boost to the local economy. A new website was launched last month, www.aberfeldymod.com, with a view to letting people know about the Mod and to share information about the events taking place. With a number of additional visitors to Aberfeldy during the Mod, members of the committee organised a window-dressing competition with many local businesses participating in raising awareness of the festival and attracting new custom.
Mary Stewart, Mod Convener, said “We are really delighted with the response this year. Everyone has pulled together to organise a fantastic event and everyone I’ve spoken to has complemented the organisation. Breadalbane Community Campus is a very good venue for the Mod and staff have been very helpful in accommodating us and the visitors”.
Full results and information on next year’s event will be posted on the website at www.aberfeldymod.com
