  • Angus C Macleod Scalpay

    Angus C Macleod Scalpay

"Angus Macleod was a very popular singer in his day, from about the 1950s. He could be heard regularly at various ceilidhs and at annual concerts put on by associations connected with the diaspora of places like Skye, Lewis and Harris, Uist and Barra, Tiree, Mull etc. especially in Glasgow, but also in Edinburgh and London. Another occasional focus was when he was asked to sing on television or invited to give a 15-minute recital on radio. The Gaelfonn publications also contributed to Angus' popularity. For the Gold Medal the qualifying songs had to be put forward in a predictable way, with note-for note accuracy and acceptable pronunciations of words. Now, the standard of singing is much more dictated by the singers themselves, for any kind of performance, which results, usually, in a more authentic sound. Some admirers may be surprised at the absence of one or two favourites; that may have been for many technical reasons. The classics are here, and some puirt a beul both of which Angus could perform with a unique clarity of diction attributable- dare I say? - to his Harris origins. There are also some short examples of songs that were familiar to him through this mother's singing around the house, and it is good that such remnants are still available" - Morag MacLeod Tha na clàr seo a' tighinn ugaibh le deagh dhùrachd mar chuimhneachan air Aonghas MacLeòid à Scalpaigh

Arthur Cormack - Nuair Bha Mi Òg

"This, his first record, will bring him to an even wider audience. It will also demonstrate the fact that the Gaelic tradition is alive and flourishing in the hands of a young performer who not only loves and respects the songs, old and new, but also stamps his own character and enthusiasm on them." - Robin Mortin, 1984

Atomic Piseag - Piseag Gu Leòr

"While Na Piseagan love and appreciate the melodies and bàrdachd of traditional Gaelic songs, we also like to encourage innovstion and have commisioned several new arrangements of more contemporary compositions, including two on this CD by the extremely talented (and forebearing!) Edinburgh musician, Neil Houstan. The choir tracks, duets and solos on this debut CD show the depth of the talent contained within the choir. Above all, we hope that it shows that we love to sing together." - Atomic Piseag
